Book Marking your place in the Literary Field - Publishing

Writer Choice & Considerations: Marketing Your Project, Reader Gene Pool, Managing Your Expectations.

Value for Words – Output: Traditional, Digital, Audio. What literary forces determine the publishing stream? What is your skill set in achieving your goal - Outsourcing: self-publish or find an agent, publisher to polish your creative works; cost and time implications.

Traditional – Writer Value: the book, artwork, the writer/reader emotional response, personal habits of page turning, folding corners, underlining, marking, your bookshelf, subliminal attachment, a personal reading experience raising valid questions as a writer, which choice, what value for me? Considered by some the ‘old fashioned’ route to getting your literary work into the marketplace. Publishing the traditional book is challenging at best. Finding or needing an agent? Direct pitching of your manuscript to a publisher? How much effort, time are we prepared to let go by before switching agents or publishers? Where does your work sit in the slush pile, promises of (every manuscript is read!) Print runs, material costs sharing, royalties, earnings, book fairs and signings. Are they of value in 2022?

Digital – Writer Value: Independence, focused marketing, cost control, time flexibility, ultimate control of your work? A platform replacing traditional books; market forces suggest this is so, especially with ease of access, competitive pricing, phone-tablet-Kindle-PC – your cyber library, consumer value, downloadable, portable, versatile, language availability.

Audio – Writer Value: Global book market value over 2 billion USD since 2019. A growing readership trending arc anticipated increasing exponentially from 2022 on wards; business share market Audible Inc (powered by Amazon) leading the way with a multiple of providers, non-exclusivity keeping market forces and choice competitive for writer and reader. Why an increasing market? Since its inception originally aimed as a platform with an inclusive readership (sight-challenged) libraries offering books on tape and CD prior to the advent of streaming and digital media hit the world; a constant tidal flow of consumers commuting, traveling, relaxing, plus educational value.

Spin-off commodities – consumer demand: ear buds, wireless headsets accessories listener led: branding, logos, pricing just a few avenues creating their own design capability for business entrepreneurs.

Prompted to write this article Matylda’s output for her first novel Gar’s Game (children’s science fiction fantasy) will be Audio; research and development stage providing a final choice. A point worth considering from personal experience, each book has its own ‘beat’ connecting you, your book and your reader; silent reading vastly different from listening to an audio book, though your audience may not be aware of this fact. Recording your words into a microphone necessitates a changing beat i.e., word endings, do they hold back the flow, or move the story along, formatting your script, ease of speech, voice tonality, just some considerations.

Matylda’s Feedback for Audio Choice: Time framework perfect therefore no creative pressure, output seamless, writing in a personal workspace so workflow ideal, found an excellent record producer, budget parameters met, readership platform work in progress-market forces a determining factor.

Influencers & Marketing

Photo&DesignML-Media2018

What did THOUGHT do?
I thought I would…they would so we click a link, check the agree box passing GO down the need to know road.
Keeping up with generational trends, new generations bypassing traditional advertising platforms – TV, Radio; seeking content on new social media platforms, meeting demands, free if possible!
Question: dead end trends… will Facebook Twitter Instagram and cohorts morph or even die? Now that’s a THOUGHT!
“Hey let me influence your life. What to buy…sell…go where?”
Street signs, posters, graphics have their real-time platform, driving, walking, tubing, leaving a digital footprint browsing online. Algo gets his eye in: tracking, supposing, adding to the THOUGHT process.
So moving into place…Influencers, influencing human algorithms, knitting together, digital proposals offered; the next media star. Tapping keys influencing you, your product, the string-puller offering you top of the pile place, top of the brands?
Notice this! That! More followers!  Outsourcing by another name: Brand Managers now THOUGHT MANAGERS influencing hungry digital café sitters, drinking in offers; will we be influenced?
My THOUGHT exactly…so let’s Blog on! So I did, and there in the corner of my eye a link to click…was I influenced? Yes, so I did. Who made contact? Jamie Gladstone offering to influence my brand with influencers offering their OPINION BRAND!
So thanks Jamie let me return my THOUGHT!

Life & The Countryside

‘Gentle Breeze & Lonely’
Sitting here in yellow sea all alone here with me Gentle Breeze my friend, I feel the tears of sweet release now from my heart descend, I didn’t ask for them to come but Lonely came with me. I’m all alone here by myself Sweet Breeze is now my friend, The tears have dried upon my cheeks wiped dry by Gentle Breeze and given me, a peaceful shade, soft yellow, sweet release. My only friend, now warm and soft, plays fingers through my hair as I sit here in yellow sea I feel my friend does care.

He comes to me from Never Land where Lonely has no friends, and sees me sitting in a field with Lonely who pretends to talk to me, and be my soul at play, but Lonely seems to follow me where I sit here today. So Gentle Breeze has come along I hear his melody, soft song. He sees my tears my lonely soul and recognises what’s gone wrong, sees why the tears just flow.

So he now blows across my face and talks to Lonely Soul. Gentle Breeze takes Lonely’s hand and blows across the field and takes him back to Never Land where Lonely is concealed, by Mellow Sun and Happy Fun where Lonely now can Laugh and Run and Joy is Time revealed...written by Matylda Laurence

Life & Nature - Ordered Disarray

‘Irony’

You stood, with iron grey beard and bended iron grey head, Dispensing largess to the breakfast crowd. Hand disappearing into your white Sainsbury’s bag, But, oh how they loved you.Their iron grey feathers blending en-masse into a frenzy, a chorus, pigeon pie, a pecking order of ordered disarray. I looked at your face, you looked up at me standing above on the iron grey bridge strangers both, but joined by common thought our love for them, feed them, and they come, white swan, orange beak amidst the iron grey, young ones half and half, pushing and shoving for your bread no fear, no tact, just hungry on this beautiful morning. No words said, but I watched, then walked on, the iron grey of the river dividing our lives. Goodbye, but thank you for generating in my heart a response,
love, wishing, care and hope. Perhaps after all we do have a future. Humanity, frail, needing to love.Yes, that is the essence, yes, that is the rope that binds us reminds us, to love, is to hope.

A Bridge Too Far

Ian Street © Photo Matylda Laurence
A Bridge too Far?  - No, for someone in Australia, this little bridge crossing a dyke in the Lincolnshire village of Trusthorpe, it brought back fond memories. Author, Ian Street who lives in the village, last year wrote a book of poems called:

A Pamphlet of Thoughts & Feelings' download from Amazon Kindle Book Store

Whilst visiting a friend, knowing Matylda was a photographer, she introduced me to Ian who lived next door. With a farming background, as was mine, I suggested he wore his best market clothes for the shoot. Only having my phone, I began this especially fine morning by taking a series of shots, much to the interest of those coming and going along the dyke road.

The front cover shot for Ian’s book was duly chosen, and the whole uploaded to Amazon Kindle. Sales to date, particularly hard copies, are excellent, with all the proceeds going to St Andrew’s Children’s Hospice in Lincolnshire.
